StrokeDirectory 2009 Welcome!

A stroke in the family affects everyone in the family, not just the stroke survivor.

The purpose of this Web site is to make it easier for all of those touched by stroke to find the various support services now available and helpful for successful recovery. We strongly encourage you to seek out and use these community services. We understand that asking for help, even needing it, may be new for you, but adapting to and coping with such a catastrophe usually demands more than can be done alone.

Virtually all of the resources included in this Web site have their own Web sites, and we encourage you to visit them, since they contain extensive information about the services they provide. You may do this easily by clicking on the hyperlinks provided with each resource maintaining a Web site.

We hope that this Web site will help you avoid the frustration of not knowing where to turn in your time of need, and that you will remember that there is life after stroke, for both the survivor and the survivor’s family.

Note: This online version of the Resources Directory does not contain certain information included in the printed version, such as the Table of Contents, very useful additional stroke information, a glossary, a contribution page, and the Index. The Index contains all of the resources/links listed in alphabetical order. The complete Marin County Stroke Resource Directory is available for viewing and printing in PDF format, which requires that you have Adobe Reader installed on your computer. You may download this for free from Adobe.

Who We Are

our Mission Statement

The Mission of the Stroke Education Council of Marin is to advocate for the needs of stroke survivors and their families and to promote access to education and resources for ongoing rehabilitation and well-being, in collaboration with other community resources.

Our History

In 1988, the Kentfield Rehabilitation Hospital Stroke Taskforce was established under the leadership of Cathy McFann, MFCC. The group was composed of former Kentfield Rehabilitation Hospital patients who were stroke survivors and their family members and caregivers.

Their efforts to learn ways to cope with the aftereffects of stroke and to share resources in our community led to the development of the first Marin County Stroke Resource Directory. They also successfully worked with the College of Marin Disabled Students Program to establish a class to meet the special educational needs of stroke survivors and caregivers.

In 1995, the stroke Taskforce revised and updated the Marin County Stroke Resource Directory and organized the first Marin County Stroke Awareness Workshop. It was followed by additional educational workshops in later years.

This grassroots organization was renamed the Stroke Education Council of Marin in 2002 with renewed associations with the American Heart Association– North Bay Division and the Regional American Stroke Association (division of the American Heart Association) as well as other community agencies and hospitals.
